Do you ever just feel like not talking? I have that happen to me quite a lot. Right after I wake up seems to be one of those times. Then there are other random times where I’m just not in a talkative mood.
I’ve noticed that when I call other people, whether they’re friends or family, I usually call them when I’m ready to talk. I have something to say, so I take the initiative to talk. I made a call to a family member a couple times last week. They were busy, so they didn’t answer. Then they called me back when they had time. By that time, though, I was no longer ready to talk. So, when they called, I was thinking, “Oh, why did they call right now?” So, I answered, but I didn’t feel like it ended up being a productive conversation. These are the times I usually end up giving a series of one-word responses. I feel kind of bad when I end up doing that. Yet, I can’t really make myself excited to talk either. It’s probably similar to a performer when they have to go on stage. Show time comes and they have to be ready to deliver, whether they’re ready or not.
Then there are times when I call someone to stay in touch, and I think they’re not really in a talkative mood either. So, finding a time when we are both wanting to talk can be a challenge. I think it’s sometimes difficult to stay in touch, for this reason. People are not only busy, but even if they’re not, you may end up calling them during they’re wind down time. They may be in a sort of vegetative state in front of the TV. You can usually tell you don’t have their full attention because some of their responses don’t really match what you’re saying. If you’re telling them about some tragic event you saw on the news and they say, “Oh, that’s cool”, you probably don’t have their full attention. Or, it’s possible they have a dark sense of humor. But I would venture to guess they’re just not listening.
So, finding that time where both parties feel like talking can be difficult. Kind of like winning the lottery. This can make it difficult to stay in contact with others. It’s important we make the effort, though. Communication is a key element in our personal relationships. It doesn’t just happen. It takes effort. I think it’s easy to forget that it’s worth the effort. I’m learning that I may have to take the initiative sometime even when I don’t feel like it. I might have to make a mental list of things to talk about. Asking the right questions can be a good conversation starter. There’s no set formula, but you’ve got to start somewhere. Oh, and making sure I’m listening is probably a good idea too.
When I think of my own unwillingness to talk, I think about how God is always willing to talk to us. And God speaks to us in different ways. Sometimes God speaks directly to us by speaking to our hearts.
In AV Isaiah 65:24 it says, “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” God is readily available to hear us when we speak to him. He’s never too busy. We can call on him at any time. I believe this verse show his readiness to speak to us. It says, “before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.”
Another way God speaks to us is through His word. AV 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” We know that what God speaks to us will be in line with what His word says. His word speaks to us in different ways. Some things are meant to correct us when we get off track and get us headed in the right direction. Other times they are meant for instructing us on how to live, how to approach a situation, or answers to question we have.

Sometimes God will speak to us through other people. Many time in the Bible God spoke to His people through prophets. In AV Acts 21:10-11 it says, “And as we tarried [there] many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver [him] into the hands of the Gentiles.” This was a warning to Paul the things he would suffer for the sake of the Gospel in Jerusalem.
Sometimes God will use a circumstance to direct us. AV Proverbs 16:9 it says, “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” I think of this in terms of how we often go about our plans we have, but sometimes God can direct us in a different direction through an open door, or a closed door. Sometimes we may not be sure what He’s directing us to do. These can be things He sometimes uses to guide us in the right direction.
It’s always comforting to know that God is speaking to us. He has a number of different ways He speaks. I guess we just need to be sure we’re listening.
