Don’t worry, be happy

How much time do you suppose we spend worrying about things? I would venture to guess that we might spend more time on it than we think. And some of us may be so used to worry that we may not realize we’re even doing it.

Worry is one of those things that sneaks into our lives without us realizing it. Some of us are so used to worry that when we run out of something to worry about we think something’s wrong. So, then our mind goes looking for new worries. But why do we worry? Is it even productive? What is the value in it? I was reading some last night about anxiety and fear. Because, really, worry is anxiety and anxiety is rooted in fear. What I was reading said that fear and stress will cause your adrenal glands to give off large amounts of adrenaline. This saps your energy levels and, as a result, reduces your ability to deal with stress. This can affect your body’s immune system and ability to repair itself. Apparently, our kidneys and adrenals are also connected. So, fear affects the kidneys as well. And kidneys affect brain function. So, prolonged stress can have an effect on memory. The good news is, though, that we can restore balance to the kidneys and adrenals by avoiding stressful situations and changing our reactions to them. We can thereby preserve our health of both our bodies and minds. Interesting!

That’s just how it affects us biologically, though. Of course there are emotional and spiritual aspects as well. But knowing now the damaging effects of worry, it should make us more aware and wanting to guard against it. I think when we really examine the reasons why we worry, we can conclude that it’s an exercise in futility. The reality is, how many of the things you worry about do you have the power to change? Really, we have only so much power as human beings. If you think about it, if you could have changed anything about the situation, you most likely would have already done it. So, since you can’t change it, then why worry about it? It really ends up being wasted energy. And knowing the harmful effects of it, harmful energy.

I’ve found myself in times past worrying about things. Sadly, it became a way of life for me. I’d worry about things that didn’t even really make sense to worry about. Worry is kind of like a dog chasing its own tail. It never gets you anywhere. You’ve probably heard that something like 90 percent of the things we worry about never happen. I’d say it’s pretty accurate. But maybe this can give us a clearer picture of how much energy we’re wasting and how harmful it is. And even if they do happen worry won’t help it. If it happens, you just deal with it when it comes.

…Let’s go deeper

AV Philippians 4:6 says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” This is a popular verse, but a good one. God doesn’t want us to worry. Why? Because then we’re not trusting Him. God says not to be full of care for anything. Then he tells us how to deal with things we might have a tendency to worry about. He wants us to bring everything to Him in prayer, with thanksgiving. So, what do we do then? We leave it there and stop worrying. It’s His to deal with. You don’t have to worry anymore.

AV Mattew 6:25-27 says, “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” The needs of this life are easy to worry about at times. These are the basic needs of life. But Jesus puts this in proper perspective for us. He shows us how God willingly takes care of the fowls of the air. Aren’t we more important than them? But He also shows us how futile it is to worry anyway. See, we can’t add anything to our lives by worrying.

Further down in AV Matthew 6:33 it says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Again Jesus refocuses us on where we should be looking. He says to seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness and He will take care of these things.

The real harm in worrying is that it shows that we’re not trusting in God. We’re unwittingly trying to take control over something that we can’t control. We might as well give it to God. He has the power to do something with it. He can change that situation if you just ask Him, and leave it in His hands.
