The Value of Being an Heir

I was thinking about the benefits of being an heir—an heir to a fortune, an heir to a throne, an heir to a legacy. There are a lot of advantages. And depending on who you are an heir to, the advantages are greater than some.

If you consider many wealthy in today’s age, the thinking has seemed to change. Probably 100 years ago wealthy parents would leave the bulk of their fortunes to their kids. The mindset has shifted somewhat from what it was. Several of the wealthy billionaires today have decided to only leave their children a minute amount of the fortunes they have accumulated. And even that comes with certain conditions. They only get the money if it’s for school, or buying a house, or a business start-up. Sometimes they only get the money once they reach a certain age. I can see the value in this way of thinking. They don’t want their children becoming trust fund babies. They don’t want to see them become dependent on their inheritance and being lazy with no goals or plans in life. And that can easily happen. It appears parents might be more aware of the dangers of wealth than in times past. Even some of the moderately wealthy people I’ve known seem to make a conscious effort to instill in their children a work ethic, and are cognizant of them being spoiled. It’s interesting, because some of the kids from less wealthy families may end up being more spoiled than the ones from wealthy families. Probably because the less wealthy are not as aware of the danger of it happening to them.

If you consider an heir to a throne, they not only get the benefits of an inheritance, they also inherit the responsibility of ruling the kingdom. So, it’s not all fun and games, there is a leadership role to step into. Ruling over a kingdom isn’t easy. Their decisions can impact countless lives. They can’t take on this role, though, until they have matured and grown up enough to realize the enormity of the task. They were raised and trained with the intent in mind that they would be given responsibilities one day. Then, one day, they will assume the role that has been waiting for them. Of course, the advantages are that they set the agenda and people have to listen to them.

While I’m not an heir to a large fortune or a kingdom, I feel I’ve inherited a legacy from my parents. I feel they prepared me for life in teaching me the value of hard work, treating people right, and a belief and faith in God. These are valuable things. It was something that they began and can be passed down to each generation. Maybe the legacy is the most important part. For that has the value of being a part of forming you into the person you become.

…Let’s go deeper

AV Romans 8:16-17 says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with [him], that we may be also glorified together.” As believers we have an inheritance waiting for us in Heaven. It’s more valuable than any inheritance we could receive here on earth. For we will inherit an eternity with Him. This doesn’t just happen, though. Like any other inheritance, we have to be prepared to receive it.

AV 2 Timothy 2:11-13 says, “[It is] a faithful saying: For if we be dead with [him], we shall also live with [him]: If we suffer, we shall also reign with [him]: if we deny [him], he also will deny us: If we believe not, [yet] he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” When we were saved the old man died. The new man now lives a life in Him. As we die daily to ourselves, we suffer. These daily sufferings prepare us to reign with Him someday.

AV Galatians 4:5-7, “To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” Once we’re saved we are adopted into the family of God. We have a knowing in our hearts that He is our Father. This says we are no longer servants, but sons.

AV 1 John 3:1 says, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.” It’s an amazing thing to think that God’s love involves Him calling us sons and daughters of God. He has, though. That not only involves a great reward, but a great responsibility. There will be sacrifices we have to make. But God has prepared for us a great reward. We are heirs and joint-heirs with Christ Jesus. What an amazing thing!
