This is a message for me. I don’t know if anyone else ever has this problem. But I tend to think ahead a lot. It’s a problem inherent to my personality, although I’ve made progress and have gotten better at it.
There are a number of problems that come with not living in the present. For one thing, you’re robbing yourself of the present. When you think about it, the only time you really possess is right now. So, if you are spending your time right now on the future, you kind of end up with neither. And that’s unfortunate when we do that. Time is a precious commodity. And we often rob ourselves of it without realizing it. We should not only make the best use of it, but enjoy it as well. And that’s another great thing about ‘living in the now’. Having a conscious awareness of right now and living in the now helps make life enjoyable.
Do you know what else living in the now will help you with? It will help you to slow down and not be in such a rush. Often times, when we are thinking too much into the future we end up rushing more. And I think the more we are thinking in the future, the more we rush. Often times we are thinking of all the things we have to get done, and the more things that come to mind, the more we rush. Much of this is based on fear. It seems we end up trying to chase down the future. If you’ve ever seen a dog chasing his tail, you get the picture. He never catches it, though, does he? It’s the same way with us. We end up chasing down what we can’t grasp instead of grasping and holding onto what we can—this present time.
If you think about the power we have. The only power we have to effect change in our lives, and in the lives of others, is right now. That’s why ‘Now’ is such a powerful time. So, in order for us to be the most effective, and productive, we need to put our energies into ‘Now’. We can’t gain any traction if our focus is on the past, or too much on the future. We will be continually diminishing our effectiveness when we take our focus off of ‘Now’.
All of this is said, not meaning to diminish the importance of planning long-term. But it’s when we are in a rush that we start to lose our focus. Thinking on the importance and power of ‘Now’ can be one of the most important things we can do to help us live a powerful and effective life. The great thing is that life is so much more enjoyable that way. You’re not wasting time and energy worrying about the future. Your energies are being spent where they have the most effect—right now.
When you think about Jesus and his time here on this earth, He didn’t seem to spend a lot of time on the future. He was living in the now. He made the most of His present time. And Jesus was the most effective person who ever lived.
AV Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” These two verses—if we will just remember these—will solve a lot of problems in our lives. Much or our problem and struggle comes when we aren’t trusting in the Lord with all our hearts, when we are leaning to our own understanding, and aren’t acknowledging Him in all our ways. But if we do the things in these verses, we can live in the present because we are trusting Him with our future. We are able to live in the now because we understand that He holds our future. He directs our paths in the now when we hand our future over to Him.
AV Psalms 118:24: “This [is] the day [which] the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” It’s interesting that this says ‘This is the day’. We wake up every day rejoicing in this day. I believe that this is partly a message for us to, not only be thankful for each day, but to grab a hold of each day, and live each day to the full in Him.

AV Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith in God has its power in the present and the now. For we possess now, by faith, that which we believe to see manifest in our lives. We may be believing for a future date. But we are believing in the ‘Now’. That’s our substance, our evidence—the faith we have now.
AV Mark 9:23: “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things [are] possible to him that believeth.” The possibilities Jesus presents for us in this verse are amazing. The limits are according to what we can believe for from Him. I believe God wants us to believe Him for great and mighty things. And I believe these things become possible as we are fully believing and living our lives in the ‘Now’.

There’s a great devotional by Sarah Young called ‘Jesus Calling’. Her writing is written from the perspective of Jesus talking directly to you. But I felt compelled to include one of her devotionals on this topic. This is one she wrote on excessive planning.
“You will not find My Peace by engaging in excessive planning: attempting to control what will happen to you in the future. That is a commonly practiced form of unbelief. When your mind spins with multiple plans, Peace may sometimes seem to be within your grasp; yet it always eludes you. Just when you think you have prepared for all possibilities, something unexpected pops up and throws things into confusion. I did not design the human mind to figure out the future. That is beyond your capability. I crafted your mind for continual communication with Me. Bring Me all your needs, your hopes and fears. Commit everything into My care. Turn from the path of planning to the path of Peace.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. —1 Peter 5:6–7 In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. —Proverbs 16:9 Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. —Psalm 37:5 nkjv
