What’s the fear about?

Fear is the enemy of a successful life. But I think the better we understand it, the better we are able to overcome it. It’s good for us to know the enemy we’re facing.

It seems that, although fear is essentially the same at the root, it can manifest in different forms. We are afraid for a number of different reasons. Sometimes we are afraid because we are rushed.

You know, last night at work–I say last night because I work nights—but I started having some minor issues with the things I was monitoring. But what I found was that I just started to make the situation worse. This was because I felt rushed and frantic. So, essentially, what was at the root of this was fear. I felt rushed, and when you rush, you tend to think less and mess up more. That’s what happened to me. That’s one thing we often miss. The fear is not only not helpful, it’s actually detrimental.

So, it’s kind of like a snowball effect. A big fear snowball. It starts rolling down the hill and gains more and more momentum. It builds upon itself. That’s when it’s important to stop it in its tracks. We need to be vigilant to just not let the fear even start. Because our best chance of stopping it is to stop it when it’s small. When we get to the point where we’re feeling overwhelmed then it gets harder and harder to maintain composure. So, we need to get it at its root before it can even start.

That’s what I should have done last night. I should have recognized what was happening from the beginning. I understand that this can sometimes be a challenge. We easily become overwhelmed by our feelings. And more negative feelings of being frantic, fearful, and uneasy just compound themselves. So, we are now allowing feelings to take control instead of acting on what we know to do.

I think now we’re getting to, not only the root of the problem, but also the solution. When we’re feeling overwhelmed it’s best to just take a step back to examine what’s going on. If I’m getting frantic, I should ask myself the question, “Is being frantic helpful?” If not, then I should get myself centered again on practically applying what I know to do. Then I just need to simply act on that knowledge—reminding myself that the feelings aren’t there to be acted on.

One thing I had to do last night when issues were finally resolved was just take a walk. I needed to get back to a state of calm and peace. And you may need to do something similar. Maybe it’s not going for a walk for you. But there’s something you can do to help you to get back to a pre-crisis state. You probably know best what that thing is. But getting to the root of fear starts by us asking, “What’s the fear about?”

…Let’s go deeper

Well, when I went for a walk last night, what I was really doing was going for a walk with God. I let him speak to me, and calm me, and get me centered back on right ways of thinking. Because really, He is the source of our peace.

AV Isaiah 41:10: “Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” God’s word to us today is to not be afraid. The reason we are to not be afraid is because of the knowledge that God is with us. There’s a peace that comes with knowing that God is in our corner. One of the things we find when we know that God is there is we walk with confidence instead of fear, assuredness instead of second-guessing. We carry ourselves differently. That’s what the great people of faith in the Bible did. They walked with confidence. Not confidence in themselves, but confidence in their God.

AV Mark 5:36: “As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.” There are a number of times where Jesus commanded people to not be in fear. The reason is because it hinders His work in our lives and in the lives of others. He wants to work in our lives, but the removal of fear has to precede the moving of His power in our lives. That’s why Jesus so often commanded us not to fear.

AV Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.” Once we have gotten rid of fear-based thinking, we need to replace it with something. This verse commands us to think on things that are good and in line with the Word. It’s not enough just to get rid of the fear. We have to replace it with faith.

AV Psalms 112:7: “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.” This is when we know we’ve really grown in this area. When we hear of bad things, or receive bad news, we don’t react out of fear. We react with an attitude of faith in God. We are so confident and assured in His goodness toward us that we have a fixed heart that is fully trusting Him to come through for us.

AV Hebrews 11:6: “But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” The basis for our connection to God is through faith. This is where it all begins. When we come to God through faith is when we are pleasing to Him. But it makes sense. We need to believe He exists and also that He will reward us when we diligently seek Him. When we react out of faith instead of fear, we are acting in a way that is pleasing to God.

AV Isaiah 41:10: “Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

AV Mark 5:36: “As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.”

AV Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.”

AV Psalms 112:7: “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.”

AV Hebrews 11:6: “But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
