What are you into?

What are your dominant thoughts? What do you think on the most? We have so many things trying to grab out attention in this busy world. There are many opportunities to be distracted. But I would suggest that the things that we think about the most are the ones that are the most important to us.

The things most people think about are the things that matter the most to them. Some people are into football. So, they spend a lot of time thinking about football—especially football coaches. For one thing, that’s their job. They have to think about it. But mostly, they think about it because they enjoy it. I wouldn’t think there are too many football coaches out there who don’t also enjoy it. They are generally passionate about what they do. And their thoughts follow their passion.

What about other people who are passionate? Some people have chosen careers in areas that are of great interest to them. Surgeons, for example, are really invested in their work. And I would have to say that I want them to be. I definitely want my surgeon to be fully invested in what he’s doing. Oh, and the same goes for my airline pilot. I want him to really enjoy his work. If I hear either my surgeon or my airline pilot mutter the words, “I hate this job”, it’s a good indicator for me to keep looking for another person in either of those chosen professions.

That points to another thing. Excellence generally follows passion. When we are truly invested in something then we want to be good at it. But mostly we are good at it just because we enjoy it. We don’t have to try really hard at it. We don’t have to force ourselves to do it because of the joy and pleasure we gain from it. It just flows naturally. It also follows that we enjoy the things where we have a natural gift. Those areas in which we are gifted are generally the ones we also enjoy. I guess it’s kind of circular. We are good at it because we enjoy it. And we enjoy it because we are good at it. But which came first? Maybe nobody knows. The passion follows the interest. The skill follows the passion. And the interest follows the skill. And now we’re back to the beginning again.

So, what am I saying with my random ramblings? I guess my point is that we can tell the things that are truly important to us by examining the things we are thinking on. And I would say the things we are thinking on the most will govern the direction of our lives. So, just examine the things that fill your mind. Are they good things? Are they things that will lead you to the destination you are aiming for? Or are they things that will lead you to an unhappy and unfulfilled life?

…Let’s go deeper
