Have some protections in place

It’s not possible, in life, to plan for every eventuality. There are just some scenarios we can’t foresee happening. However, it is possible to have some general protocols or contingencies in place to provide us protection at the proper times.

Here’s one thing we all pay for, but probably wouldn’t if we didn’t have to. I know what your thinking—‘taxes’. No, while that would also fit that definition, what I was thinking of was ‘insurance’. Yeah, I know. Another ugly word. I suppose on the ranking of ugly words it probably ranks right underneath taxes, with taxes being at the top. But insurance, while we hate paying those monthly premiums, comes in handy once in a while. Every month we pay for something we don’t see any immediate benefit from. It’s then that we begin thinking, “Look at all the money I could save if I wasn’t’ paying for this every month.” But then there are those times when your vehicle gets hailed out at the airport while you’re on vacation in Hawaii. (I only use this scenario because this actually happened to me.) The next minute we’re on the phone with the insurance agent, “Uh, heeeey there. You remember me, don’t you? You guys are going to pay for this, right?” Suddenly your insurance agent is your best friend and you’re wondering if you should have, maybe, worked up a little more of a rapport with them.

But things like this are set up for a reason. Besides the fact that going without auto insurance is illegal, it would be a good idea anyway. It keeps one mishap from bringing us to financial ruin. There are other things, though, that can be wise moves for us. Some people have home security systems. And depending on the area you live in, this can be a wise decision. But if you live like Grizzly Adams in a shack in the mountains, it might not be a wise use of your finances. Of course, I forgot, he had Big Ben for protection. Home security, for him, would have been a moot point. A grizzly bear standing between a burglar and your front door trumps ADT any day. But see, even he had some protections in place.

And even just planning for the future with some kind of ‘rainy day’ fund might be a good idea. I believe a number of financial experts recommend having up to six months of income set aside in savings. That may sound like a lot. But things happen that we can’t always anticipate. And it’s not that we have to go overboard with these things. But planning for some of these things can just be a wise use of our resources. Since we don’t know the future, we can plan for some things by just using wisdom. And in those times of crisis we can be glad that we planned and made room for certain contingencies.

…Let’s go deeper

Sometimes, as believers, we can often think that we aren’t relying on God planning for things. And it’s true, we can get carried away to the point that we’re relying on natural means rather than fostering a dependence on God. But I think it’s a matter of what our heart is ultimately relying on. While we want to be dependent on God, the Bible does call for wisdom and prudence in our lives.

AV Genesis 41:35-36: “And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.” God gave a dream to Pharaoh in Egypt. Joseph was able to interpret that dream for Pharaoh. As a result, Joseph called for the food gathered in the good years to be laid up for the years of famine. This planning, which was directed by God, allowed for the saving of many lives in Egypt. This was planning, but planning that was wise, as it was directed by God.

AV Ephesians 6:13: “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” This verse speaks about a spiritual preparation we are to have in place as we go about facing each new day. God has a spiritual armour for us to wear that protects us from the devices of the enemy. What’s the ‘evil day’? It’s the day the day that we face trouble or calamity. That’s the reason we wear the armour. It’s so that we’re prepared and not taken by surprise in these things.

AV Proverbs 19:21: “[There are] many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.” While we can have many plans in our minds for the things in the future, ultimately these plans should be subject to the authority of God and His plans. The way in which God leads us, He will also instruct. He will show us how to prepare, what pieces we need to have in place, and when to act.

AV 2 Thessalonians 3:3: “But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep [you] from evil.” Even with all the protections we have in place, we ultimately need to be trusting Him for our safety. I guess the main idea is, ‘we do our part, and God does His part.’ Planning has its place in our lives. But in the midst of it all, we remember that our reliance is on Him.
