Cycle of Negativity

How do we find ourselves getting into these negative feedback loops? It seems we can come to a point where the negativity feeds upon itself. That’s when we get into a cycle of negativity. It happens so many times. But I don’t think we usually realize when it’s happening. We know something’s not right, but we don’t know what, or how to fix it.

What I’ve seen sometimes in businesses is where this is definitely the case. With larger corporations it may be even more prevalent. You may see where a corporation is hesitant to invest in a business unit because it’s not profitable. Yet the business unit remains unprofitable because the corporation won’t invest in it. So, it’s kind of the case where the cause is blaming the effect. Sounds ludicrous. But it happens, nonetheless. When somebody finally points this out to leadership I would think it would cause this kind of ‘Duh’ moment. But until then, it appears that the light bulb never comes on. I guess sometimes you need someone to flip the switch for you.

We sometimes see this play out on a personal level. We may have had a bad experience with something, so because of that we refrain from putting ourselves in a position of having new experiences. And because we aren’t in a position of having new experiences, of course, we have no new experiences. Doesn’t seem too hard to figure out, does it? But we don’t always examine things from this level, or from the point of logic. Many times, much of our decision-making paradigm is based on emotion at the expense of logic. We are emotionally invested in most things that we care about. That’s not a bad thing. But the problem comes when it clouds our judgment in making sound decisions. And it easily does so when we’re in a negative feedback loop.

This negative energy seems to feed upon itself. And it’s self-reinforcing. One negative outcome is produced which loops back and feeds the original cause. It appears to be something that can’t be broken—it appears to be. I mean, how do you get out of something like this? It’s the proverbial snowball rolling down the hill that seems it can’t be stopped. So, what does one do?

The answer is simple: something has to break the cycle. At some point the parties involved in this insanity have to step out of the loop and take a risk. Without the courage to endure the possibility of failure, there can be no positive outcomes. One might say, “Yeah, but something bad might happen if I take a risk.” Well, something bad is already happening. You’ve just decided to live in the muck, rather than break out of it. You are choosing a definite negative at the expense of a possible positive. You can sit in this merry-go-round for a long time, but the fact remains—something has to break the cycle.
