Being a servant makes you a king

Servanthood sometimes gets overlooked in the grand scheme of things. Conversely, power and privilege sometimes gets overrated. One wants the perks of one without the responsibilities of the other. But a true leader is one who has learned that his position is not only one of privilege, but also of responsibility. A leader who doesn’t know the value of servanthood doesn’t know the true meaning of leadership.

When we look at many of our leaders today, you have to question why they sought a leadership role in the first place. Maybe it’s partly what we talked about yesterday—vanity. I question whether most of them have a complete understanding of the role they have undertaken. A U. S. President, for example, has an immense responsibility. Knowing that, I keep thinking to myself that the candidates who would want the office would have to be right up near the edges of sanity, if they haven’t crossed over the line altogether. I just can’t picture someone sitting on their couch, eating a bag of potato chips in front of the State of the Union address, and thinking to themselves, “Yeah, I could do that job.” Oh really, supergenius? Well, don’t let me stand in your way.

That’s another thing, too. It’s not just about having the intelligence. Mental aptitude can only take you so far. You have to have the personality for it. To campaign for over a year, meeting people from all over the country, and trying to sell yourself to everyone you meet also takes a certain amount of emotional intelligence. You can’t just be some whiz kid who has no ability to relate to people. It takes a unique kind of person to fill the role.

But mostly, the leaders who are good at it, and who fill the role properly are the ones who feel called to the role. They feel something pulling them towards that position besides their own ego. They don’t jump in haphazardly because they know the great weight of responsibility that will be on them. They have counted the cost of leadership, not just added up the perks. In fact, the perks are never a part of their motivation. It’s not a desire to rule that they have, it’s a desire to serve.

That’s the contradiction of leadership that we don’t often see. If you’re going to throw your hat in the ring to lead, then you have to do it for the right reasons. Otherwise, your flawed motives will come out sooner or later. Since your motives for making decisions aren’t properly grounded, you’ll find yourself in the unfortunate position of making poor decisions. And it won’t just affect you. It’ll affect a number of other people as well. Someone who wants to lead shouldn’t ask themselves the question, “Am I ready to be a leader?” they should ask themselves the question, “Am I ready to be a servant.”
