Looking through the wrong lens can distort your view

I don’t wear glasses, myself, but I’ve sometimes wondered what it would be like to wear them. Not that I want to wear glasses. Thankfully, I have good eyes, so I have no need for glasses. But I guess I sometimes wondered how they would look on me. Some people look better with glasses than without. I just wondered if I was one of those people. I’ve even tried on a friend or family member’s from time to time to see how I would look. I guess they can make you look smart sometimes even when you’re not. It’s like, you put them on, and you give your IQ an automatic 30 point bump. At least, your perceived IQ. But who wears glasses when you don’t need them, right?

That got me to thinking. Sometimes I think we’re wearing glasses in a figurative sense. But just like described above, they are glasses we don’t really need. These glasses contain lenses of different sorts. When you think about what glasses do, they actually distort your vision. This distortion is meant to bring what is someone’s blurry vision—on its own—back into focus. So, it’s a distortion to compensate for your own blurry vision. Sometimes the lens we start to see things through is a distortion based on people who have wronged us in the past. Sometimes the lens is distorted because of the culture we live in. And sometimes the lens is distorted because we are only seeing from our own perspective, and not the perspective of other people. But regardless, none of these lenses actually help our vision. In fact, they make it worse. We are now seeing a distortion on top of distortion.

It makes you wonder, “If we wouldn’t wear real glasses with the wrong prescription, why would we do it in a figurative sense?” All of these lenses we start to see life through—we put them on without even thinking about it. But that makes about as much sense as me putting on my friend’s glasses to see how they look on me. Who cares how they look on me—I can’t see anything through their Coke bottle lenses. But at least in that case, although it’s a superficial reason, it’s at least a reason. I don’t know if there is a real reason why we choose to see life through all these other lenses. I guess it’s because we choose to. Maybe it’s because it happens without us thinking about it. And it’s so subtle that it happens without us realizing it.

In reality, we all need glasses. But the prescription is the same for everybody. These are the lens of truth that brings the eyes of all back into focus. There is a ‘truth’ lens that clears up the vision of everybody. It’s a kind of one-size-fits-all lens. And that’s the lens through which we need to make sure we’re viewing life and other people.
