I have to admit, sometimes it’s really difficult not to go off on a tangent and unload about everything that irritates you. You can see yourself do something over and over again with the expectation of different results, and as frustrating as that is, you still know you have some power to change it. However, seeing other people, or groups, doing the same thing over and over again tends to peg your frustration meter over into the redline area. We have a piece of paper hanging on the wall at work with the caption, ‘Bang head here’. It’s a reflection of the inevitable times of frustration that can come working in this line of work. But it’s these kinds of times where you wish you had that piece of paper with you.
I just got back from the grocery store after the 9 o’clock hour. I don’t normally buy groceries at this time of night, but the few times I have it’s been relatively busy. It seems to always be the same scenario: two lanes open with long lines in each one. What inevitably ends up happening is that they call stock employees up to fill in as cashiers. A natural question that comes to my mind is: “Why don’t they just have more cashiers in the evening?” Regardless, for whatever reason, this scenario doesn’t seem to compel them to pursue any new course of action. Granted, this is an unusually busy store. My only conclusion is they must be thinking, “Since we shouldn’t be busy this time of night, then we obviously aren’t”. I suppose since most stores aren’t very busy during that time of night they just plug in the same hiring practices as the rest of the franchise. It’s the kind of ‘we determine our own reality’ type thinking. And they’re not going to let reality get in the way of their hiring practices.

We, as human beings, are interesting creatures. As reluctant as we are to change our behavior, we can be downright bullheaded when it comes to being forced to change. And this goes for both sides. I was frustrated because this deferred my plans for a few minutes and this store still refuses to change its behavior. How dare they?! What happens when one unstoppable force meets an immovable object? Nothing. They both just get mad.
While I didn’t allow myself to get to the point of blowing a gasket, I did find myself frustrated. Some things are never going to make sense in this life. It’s an important lesson to learn. As much as we would like to change other people or situations, the most important this to change is ourselves. But these little things are learning experiences for me. I think I’ve figured out how to avoid complaining: 1) Don’t let these minor things get to me 2) Don’t go shopping after 9 o’clock.
