Have you ever used that tool you learned from Sesame Street where you eliminate the one thing that doesn’t belong in a series? I have actually found that to be a useful tool. I still use that concept today. I have carried it well into my adult years. It’s funny to think such a simple tool can be useful at this stage in my life. You tend to think that the older you get the more complex your problems become. Therefore, the tools you use to solve them become more complex. But not always. Sometimes those simple things remain just as useful, regardless of age.
To be honest, the process of elimination has helped me the most in situations where I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing. This is even the case sometimes at my work. If the answer isn’t clear by any other metric, sometimes I just have to go through and find out what doesn’t seem to fit. In the work that I do in a mainframe environment, the jobs running on the mainframe run in something called JCL (Job Control Language). When these jobs don’t run correctly, we have to look at the lines within the job to see what went wrong. Sometimes the answer is clear, but sometimes it’s not. That’s when I just look for something that doesn’t look quite right. I’d like to make it sound more technical than it is, but really, when it gets to this point it’s no more complicated than that concept from Sesame Street: Just look for what doesn’t belong.
You’d think the simplicity of that thought process would eventually find an environment where it’s not applicable. But really, I can’t think of an area of life where you can’t use this concept. I know it was certainly helpful in all of the multiple choice tests I have taken over the years—especially if I had no clue what the correct answer was. That’s kind of where multiple choice questions worked in your favor. You still had a 25 percent chance of getting the answer right, even if you just guessed. However, guessing in an essay form test can be a bit more catastrophic. You’re kind of out there working without a net. You could just go through writing a bunch of nonsense, but the teacher would soon discover that this was an area of subject you had failed to grasp—or study.

I have to admit, my use of the process of elimination doesn’t reflect my great knowledge about a certain topic. Rather, it happens because of my lack of knowledge on that topic. But while I may lack knowledge on that thing, I can always use wisdom in applying this simple tool to the circumstance at hand. Sometimes when I reach the end of my own collective knowledge, all I have to do is go back and remember what I learned on Sesame Street.
