I was pondering yesterday something that is true for all of us. We all have to keep moving in life. If we don’t, we end up falling behind. It’s true in just about everything.
One thing that made me think about this was how our bodies function and operate. I’ve been reading lately about health issues. I’ve been researching some things for myself. It’s pretty amazing how the human body is designed. We have so many systems to handle different things and they all work together. It’s a complex cooperation between organs and systems. I’ve been reading specifically about the liver. Apparently, it’s the 2nd most important organ we have, behind the heart. Of course, we can’t live without a heart. However, we can’t live without a liver either. The liver weighs 2.5 to 5 pounds and is located in the upper right side of the abdomen. There are really a lot of different functions the liver serves in our bodies. It cleans our blood. It produces bile which helps us digest our food and metabolize fats. And since the bile is alkaline it helps neutralize our stomach acid. Apparently, our liver creates about a quart of bile a day. At least, it’s supposed to. The liver is probably second only to the brain in complexity. It has powerful regenerative properties. If you lost up to 75 percent of your liver from injury or surgery it can grow back to normal size within months. Of what we know about the liver today, it has at least 500 functions and is believed to have over 2500 functions. So, we don’t even understand everything it does, and that’s just the liver.
There are a lot of other important functions in our bodies. They operate day in and day out, no matter what. If they didn’t we couldn’t live. Our bodies or fighting off infections, cancers, toxins, etc. all the time. These aren’t just events that sometimes happen. They’re events that are continually happening. So, our body is forced to respond to these things daily.
I was thinking about how our lives, in general, are pretty much the same. We have issues to deal with and functions we have to serve every day with responsibilities that come with them. We have a job to go to so we can eat every day and provide for ourselves, and our families. Then, there are bills we have to pay and deadlines we have to meet. So, on a daily basis we have to meet a certain number of obligations. And these things don’t just happen. If we just sat at home every day it would all fall apart.
So, my point is life is just naturally a battle. I almost hate to phrase it that way, but it is true. Even though there are a lot of great and enjoyable things about life, we have to keep moving in order for it all to happen.
So, as it is in the natural realm, it is in the spiritual realm as well. Each day brings us a new set of challenges that we have to face. And to do these things we have to fight using the Word of God, the sword of the Spirit. If we aren’t continually fighting we are stagnating and not moving forward or losing ground. We have daily spiritual battles to face every day that involve the world, the flesh and the devil. In all of our battles, though, God is there to help us.

In Psalms 27:1 it says, “The LORD [is] my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD [is] the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” So, first of all we need to realize that God is there. He is in our corner ready to fight with us. This will give us confidence when things look bleak.
James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” So, since we know that God is in our corner, it’s important that we remember this too. This is important to remember in the face of every temptation. First we submit to God. Then we resist the devil and he will flee from us. We don’t just resist the devil. That won’t work. The Word says we have to submit to God first. If we just resist the devil then we are fighting him in the flesh. Our power comes when we submit to God and His authority. So, for example, we can’t be in rebellion to God and expect to be able to fight. We have to make sure we’re in line with Him so that we can fight.
Ephesians 6:11-12 says, “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].” Subsequent verses here describe for us what the whole armor of God is: your loins girt about with truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, So, these verses frame our situation pretty well. We need to remember that ultimately, when we are in a spiritual fight, we are not fighting against people or the flesh. We have an enemy working hard against us every day. It’s He and his angels that are there resisting us every day. It’s important we are prepared for this battle as we go about our day. This way we can have a proper perspective in our lives and win these battles we face on a daily basis.
