Is newer always better?

It’s funny how the new is generally preferred over the old. Well, not just new, but the more perfect as compared to the well-worn. The steady recycling of the old is just a result of always striving for something better. But that makes you wonder: since everything becomes old eventually, is that newer thing always better? What about the old and well-established?

I didn’t really come to appreciate the old until I attended architecture school. I had always valued new construction as a sign that something new and interesting was happening. But what about all those old buildings? I never paid them much attention, because I saw them as something that was just decaying and dying. I didn’t really see the potential, you could say. The funny thing is, I loved watching shows like ‘This Old House’ where they would just go in and renovate an old dwelling in a sad state of disrepair. It was amazing how they could turn a building completely around and figuratively buff it to a high gloss like a shiny new penny. But even then I still didn’t appreciate these old structures for the character they displayed. I guess architecture school taught me that. When you’re an architect, these buildings aren’t just tolerated, but treasured. You don’t see them as an encumbrance, but as an opportunity—an opportunity to take what’s already there and build upon it. Every new addition is a moment or period of growth. Every scar tells a story of pain that a new building can’t. Kind of like a blank canvas, a new building is just one that doesn’t yet have a story to tell. An old one is full of stories and learned lessons to be shared. It’s the wise old sage of physical structures.

But though we automatically gravitate towards the new, we still seem to have an innate appreciation for the old—our affinity for ripped jeans speaks as much to this. New jeans are stiff and uncomfortable; old ones have learned to conform to your shape and your movements. We appreciate this. We learn to value their rips and tears because it’s just a nod in our direction that they understand us. So, we walk with these old friends because we’ve come to an understanding.

Seeing the old in a new light begins to change our perspective of the new. That new thing that used to automatically grab our attention doesn’t stand out as much. There’s a downside to being new: it’s untested; it’s pure potential—but unrealized; it’s, somehow, sterile with an undeveloped soul. I guess new is in many ways perfect. But, in this case—in a certain way—-perfect becomes the enemy of good. It’s new but hasn’t yet fully become what it can be. It’s a newly-built ship in port that has never left the harbor. It’s not that that’s bad, it’s just that it’s not yet fully become that which is good. It can only be known once it leaves the shipyard.
